These guys started their courtship from opposite sides of the world, after a chance meeting during a business trip. And despite the distance, they made it work and celebrated their love with an epic wedding at Fernbank Farm on the NSW central coast.
There were plenty of DIY decorations and dancing and luckily for Anique, a top-notch makeup artist on standby (read on and it will all make sense).
Tell us about how you met and the proposal?
Anique, who is German, was working for a travel tour operator selling Australia, and Chris was the agent working with her from Australia and booking her tours. We met in New Zealand during a business trip – we were both in unhappy relationships at the time, but knew that there was something special between us – we stayed in contact daily and soon, both ended our relationships. Ten months later, Anique moved to the other side of the world to be with Chris.
Chris proposed during a trip to Germany in Stuttgart, Anique’s hometown, under a huge Christmas tree on the ‘Schlossplatz’ following a beautiful dinner. We were basically alone, it was very romantic and of course, Anique said yes.
What DIY projects did you do accomplish for the wedding?
We planned the whole wedding, we wanted to source all our own vendors and be flexible, which was fun but also a bit stressful. Our favours were homemade, guilt-free cookies baked by a friend, we did the wrapping ourselves, same as decorating the place with a few extras like polaroid shots from us etc.
What sort of vibe were you going for with your styling?
Rustic, slightly vintage inspired.
What traditions did you involve during your big day?
Anique’s dad walked her down the aisle / something new (shoes), old (preloved wedding dress), borrowed ( gold bangle from Chris’s mum), blue (a vintage handkerchief that my friend gave me on the wedding day).
Other than that, we wanted to keep it casual and not do too many traditions, like the garter throwing or bouquet throwing.
What advice would you give to other couples leading up to their big day?
Don’t stress! And enjoy – it will be over way too soon.
What does marriage mean to you?
It means everything! We feel even closer, we love having the same name and we just feel like a team.
What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?
Too many to have a favourite, but a real highlight for all our guests were the wonderful speeches. Chris’ brother and father gave a really heartfelt and funny speeches, but Anique’s father was probably the best of the night and appreciated by all. He gave his speech all in English, even though it is not his native language, and it was beautiful.
Tell us any funny stories that surrounded your wedding?
The night before the wedding, we all had a dinner together at the property (wedding party and family). Because it rained, we all had to stay indoors, which made it even cosier and everyone got on so well. It was dark outside and I (Anique) decided to get something from the other house – and walked directly into the glass door and banged my head quite a bit. The next day – the wedding day – , I had a bit of a bruise and my eye was red, so my dad had to go to the pharmacy and get something quickly. Luckily, the makeup artist did a great job and it wasn’t visible.
The property has dogs and at a later stage during the party, all of a sudden the dog was on the dance floor and I danced with him.
Ceremony song? “Ich kenne nichts” from Xavier Naidoo – a German artist (translated, “I don’t know anything that is more beautiful than you”) – Anique is German
First dance song? “If I should fall behind” – Original version from Bruce Springsteen, our song was the cover from Paul Carrack.
