Sustainable Weddings: Myth or Reality?

Weddings are magical, but let’s be real - they can also leave behind a footprint (and we’re not just talking about the dance floor aftermath). So, is a sustainable wedding actually possible, or just a feel-good myth? Image by Scott Surplice.

Planning a wedding comes with a whole lot of decisions - what to wear, what to eat, who’s on the guest list (and who actually makes the final cut). But what about the impact of it all? Can a wedding really be sustainable, or is that just wishful thinking wrapped up in a recycled paper bow?

The answer? It’s complicated. But doable.

Let’s start with the obvious: weddings bring people together, and with that comes travel, catering, decor, and a whole lot of resource use. But before you elope out of eco-guilt, know that a wedding can absolutely be more conscious without losing the magic. Here’s how.

Eat local, drink local

A South Coast wedding is the perfect excuse to highlight the best of the region. Think fresh oysters, local wines, farm-to-table feasts, and menus designed around what’s in season, not what’s being flown in from overseas. Not only does it taste better (because obviously), but it cuts down on unnecessary food miles. Discover our top South Coast wedding venues here.

Pre-loved, but make it chic

Wedding fashion is shifting, and re-wearing, renting, or sourcing second-hand or vintage pieces is no longer a niche choice - it’s a smart one that many couples make. Whether it’s a pre-loved gown, a reworked suit, or letting your bridesmaids choose their own designer dresses from a rental outlet (at a fraction of the price, may we add), sustainable style is just as elegant as brand-new.

Bye-bye, floral foam

Your florals should be fresh, not forever. Foam-free floristry, potted plants, and locally grown blooms mean you get all the beauty without the plastic waste. Many florists operate on a minimal-waste basis, or chat to your preferred florist to see how they can adjust their standard practices for your wedding. Bonus points for repurposing arrangements post-wedding - drop them to a local nursing home or let guests take them home.

Minimise waste, maximise impact

From digital invitations to biodegradable confetti (check out our round-up of eco friendly confetti alternatives), small swaps can make a big difference. Renting decor, using compostable serveware, and repurposing florals all help keep unnecessary waste in check. And when it comes to food, consider working with caterers who can donate leftovers to local charities instead of sending them to landfill. A wedding can be a feast without the waste.

The guest factor

Destination weddings are dreamy, but they come with a carbon footprint. If you’re inviting guests from far and wide, consider offsetting the travel impact with tree-planting initiatives or opt for a venue where everything - ceremony, reception and even accommodation - is in one place to reduce unnecessary transport.

So, myth or reality? A wedding will always have an environmental impact, but with thoughtful choices, it can be a whole lot lighter on the planet - and still be one of your very best days ever.
