For over 40 years, MDT DESIGN has been helping couples create engagement rings and wedding rings that become treasured family heirlooms. Located on Melbourne's iconic Collins Street, we're Australia's most awarded jewellers, specialising exclusively in entirely handmade fine jewellery.

Unlike many modern jewellers, every piece we create is individually handmade in our on-site Melbourne workshop using traditional techniques. We don't use CAD, casting or mass production. Each engagement ring and wedding ring is carefully crafted by our experienced jewellers from precious metals including platinum and 18ct gold, creating jewellery designed to be worn and loved for generations.

Whether you've dreamt of a timeless solitaire diamond engagement ring, a unique coloured gemstone design, matching wedding bands or something completely one-of-a-kind, we'll guide you through every step of the design process. From the initial consultation and diamond selection through to the final polish, your jewellery is created specifically for you.

Our speciality is custom-made engagement rings and wedding rings, however we also create bespoke jewellery featuring natural diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds, allowing every couple to choose the option that best suits their style and budget.

At MDT DESIGN, we believe choosing your rings should be relaxed, educational and enjoyable. We'll explain everything from diamond quality and precious metals to design considerations, ensuring you feel completely confident in your decision.

Our commitment doesn't end when you collect your rings. We provide complimentary lifetime cleaning and polishing, expert aftercare and a manufacturer's warranty. Our on-site workshop also specialises in professional jewellery repairs, ring resizing, jewellery remodelling and complete ring remakes, allowing your treasured pieces to be maintained, restored or transformed for many years to come.

More about the vendor team

I'm Kosta Theochari, Managing Director of MDT DESIGN, qualified jeweller, diamond grader and second-generation member of our family business.

I began my jewellery apprenticeship with my father, Nicholas Theochari, in 2003 and have spent more than two decades learning every aspect of traditional jewellery making. Today, I oversee our Melbourne workshop while continuing to work closely with couples to design engagement rings and wedding rings that reflect their personalities and stories.

One of my greatest passions is sourcing exceptional diamonds. Rather than purchasing diamonds in bulk, I personally inspect and hand-select each stone, rejecting the vast majority that don't meet our standards. I believe every engagement ring deserves a diamond chosen for its beauty, brilliance and character—not simply its grading report.

Education is a huge part of how I work. I enjoy helping couples understand diamonds, gemstones and jewellery design so they can make informed decisions without pressure. My goal is for every client to leave feeling confident that they've created something truly special.

As Australia's most awarded jewellers, my family and I remain committed to traditional handmade craftsmanship. Every engagement ring and wedding ring is individually made in our Melbourne workshop using time-honoured techniques rather than mass production. It's a philosophy that has been part of MDT DESIGN since 1981 and continues to define everything we do today.

For me, the greatest reward is seeing a couple return years later to celebrate another milestone, knowing the jewellery we created has become part of their family's story.
