Believe it or not, even the toilets are a selling point at this stunning VIC farm wedding venue. Located on a property in Central Gippsland, every detail of Mewburn Park Homestead has been purposefully crafted to accommodate couples wanting a personalised and stress-free wedding.
Here we find out what got them started and what else (loos aside) sets their venue apart.
So, Mewburn Park – can you tell us a bit about it?
Mewburn Park Homestead is tucked away on a farm just out from our quaint little township of Maffra, Central Gippsland. We’re an old estate homestead dating from the 1850s boasting lush green gardens, huge shady trees, tranquil ponds, historic stables and a beautiful clear view marquee.
What inspired you to get involved with weddings?
We both have a background in hospitality and graphic design and loved the idea of merging these two worlds. We were working in Germany and were tired of working for other people and companies. Mewburn Park was Adam’s family home, so we’d always had the idea to go back home and create something special there.
Once we made the decision to start our dream, we did heaps of travelling beforehand (claimed as research!?) and set off to make it all a reality. We just had to figure out how to push the homestead in a direction that would attract couples to have their wedding here.
A clear view marquee among the already existing lush gardens was the start – we loved the idea of having the outside garden coming into the reception space and still being able to view all of the surroundings.
What kind of facilities does the homestead offer?
We love our driveway. It sounds random but the beautiful, oak tree-lined driveway takes you away from your every day and you instantly relax! We have some beautiful spots for ceremonies in our gardens, where you can choose the homestead as your backdrop, or under the huge oak tree, or down by the pond and the poplar trees.
Another ceremony favourite is ‘The Stables’, home to some of the old Caulfield Cup champions. Heritage listed, The Stables offer an impressive space for ceremonies in the courtyard, followed by post-ceremony drinks or even an open air reception. The Stables Bar is tucked away in the old workshop of the Stables, filled with authentic knick-knacks from the 1800s.
For your reception, our clear view marquee is fully equipped with everything you need. From wooden tables and chairs, outdoor bar furniture, festoon lights, bar, solid concrete flooring and decking and plenty of power for your band/DJ to rock out. Inside, the marquee is basically a blank canvas for our couples to create their special day, so all our weddings look different.
The girls can decide to get ready on the property in the bridal suite, located in the old Servant Quarters. It’s one of the most tranquil and relaxing places to be, as the only thing you will hear are the birds swooping in front of you. We’re now doing sleepovers, so the girls can all stay over the night before, or the newly weds can sleep over the night of their wedding and wake up to our breakfast L’Amour on the verandah. Oh délicieux bébé!
Last but not least, you should check out our toilets, no joke. They are awesome. Each toilet is styled differently and you’ll find your guests wanting to check out each and every one of them (FYI they include a disabled toilet and baby change table).
What do you think is the selling point for most couples?
A lot of our couples loooove the fact that they can stay in the one spot all day. Ceremony, photos, after ceremony drinks and reception all in the one place. I guess you could say it’s a relaxed option! The clear view marquee also seems to attract many couples and we’ve positioned it so that couples and their guests get the most out of the stunning views.
Farm charm, mountain ranges, stables and ponds… it’s all very chilled! It’s also cool for the couples to get to choose their own caterer. We have five amazing (and local) kitchens to choose from and they all offer amazing food and service. It’s just another way to help the couple tailor their wedding by hand picking all the right vendors for that right vibe. We’re also not open to the public, so once you book with us, you and your guests have the venue to yourselves.
Do you offer onsite accommodation? Alternatively, are there places to stay nearby?
Yup, we offer accommodation in the Old Servants’ Quarters wing for the bride-to-be and her girls for the night before, or for the bridal couple on their wedding day. We’re so lucky to have other great accommodation options all within 5-15 minutes from us. From boutique accommodation, B&Bs, trendy apartments to basic motel accommodation. There’s even a free RV campsite in town so, sleepovers for all guests is no problem.
What’s your favourite thing you’ve seen a couple do at your venue?
Almost every wedding offers something unique and special but we would have to say some of our favourite things were a massive floral installation towering up The Stables doors; the DJ driving his kombi van into the marquee onto the dance floor and playing music from it; the best friend of the bride becoming a celebrant just for their ceremony.
And what do you think would be epic at your property? Any ideas you’d love to see a couple carry out?
We would absolutely love a night time ceremony. Bride and groom could do a reveal beforehand, taking most of the photos then. After this, they head back to the bridal suite to freshen up and actually have a moment for just the two of them. We serve them some bubbly to celebrate and a gourmet grazing platter. Then have the guests arrive around 5 pm, being welcomed with trays of drinks and plenty of canapés before the ceremony. Then, when dusk sets in, having loads of candles in the ceremony spot to create that romantic atmosphere and they say ‘I do’ in the most intimate, stunning ceremony. Later everyone enjoys the clear view marquee whilst more roaming cocktail style food is being served and the party is about to start… just thinking out loud.
We would also love to see someone deck out the clear view marquee with plush sofas, palms, round bars, a massive boudoir! Oh yeah.
Can you describe the kind of couples your venue attracts?
Our couples seem to be looking for something different and off the beaten track. A rustic setting but with a touch of glam, nicely styled and somewhere they can host their nearest and dearest in one spot for a fun day. They also like the idea of having something secluded and private and good service for their guests is also very important for them.
Any new venue developments or plans on the horizon?
Oh yeah! We call it the Madonna effect, every 3-5 years something new. You’ve gotta keep staying fresh. It is going to be something new in our gardens, so watch out!
