Things to make you go ‘I do’.

VENUE FEATURE: Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne wedding venue

Melbourne Zoo probably isn’t the first place that springs to mind when looking for a VIC wedding venue. It’s for that exact reason however, that we love the idea of getting hitched here – it’s very unique, unpredictable and the only place where you can feed a giraffe in the region.

The gardens are an added attraction and the in-house catering team is exceptional. Plus, it’s located right in town so there are plenty of after-party and accommodation options nearby.

Melbourne Zoo – it’s definitely not a traditional spot to get hitched. Tell us more about it.

Melbourne Zoo is one of the most unique places in Victoria to get married. For starters, there are the animals. They help provide an epic wedding setting and the most stunning wedding photographs. And they add to an exciting atmosphere.

We also have a number of animal experiences that can be added to your wedding, including feeding a giraffe a special bouquet.

Besides the animals, our gardens make us truly unique again as we have different habitats designed to reflect the natural surroundings of particular animals. We’re also known as being one of Victoria’s most treasured gardens (established in 1862). You can find yourself strolling through a South East Asian bamboo forest then through our award-winning authentic Japanese garden or finishing off at the iconic 150 year old Moreton Bay Fig Tree with manicured lawns.

We have three main reception rooms and numerous ceremony spaces at the Zoo. We also have a very strong focus on sustainability and ethical practices. We have a commitment to sourcing ethical produce, reducing wastage, participating in social and community programs, encouraging all sustainability practices and supporting Zoos Victoria and their many conservation goals.

What inspired you to get involved with weddings?

We are part of Restaurant Associates Group which has an impeccable reputation for crafting contemporary cuisine and delivering flawless events in some of the most culturally significant venues around the world.

We also cater and manage Werribee Open Range Zoo, NGV, Scienceworks, The Immigration Museum and Melbourne Museum. The Melbourne Zoo however, was a natural step for us as it is one of the most famous and beautiful sites in Melbourne and once you visit, you realise it is the perfect setting for a wedding.

Tell us about the facilities your venue offers?

We have three main reception rooms: Leopard Lodge, Bong Su and Rainforest Room, all with their own bridal suite. We are the exclusive caterers but can tailor the packages to suit tastes, dietaries and budgets. We have open-plan rooms and utilise a range of trusted external suppliers which means guests can custom-design the look, sound, layout and style of their function.

What do you think is the selling point for most couples?

The main selling point would be the setting among the magnificent gardens and intriguing animals. You can’t get this anywhere else.

Do you offer onsite accommodation? Alternatively, are there places to stay nearby?

We don’t offer accommodation at the Zoo besides our ‘Roar n Snore’ camping. However, being next to the city we have an extensive range of accommodation that is easily accessible. Guests can walk to The Larwill Studio which is part of the beautiful Art Series Hotels, however again the city allows for all types of budgets and levels of comfort.

Describe the kind of couples your venue attracts?

Animal lovers. Couples looking for an unforgettable experience that will have their guests talking for years.

Any new additions on the horizon?

We are always looking to develop our venues and wedding offerings to stay contemporary and innovative.
