One of the main reasons why Sydney wedding photographer Will of This Day Forward does what he does is equally heartbreaking and heartwarming.
In sharing his story, it’s easy for others to truly understand why shooting weddings for him goes way, way, way beyond being just a job. Wedding photography is about capturing moments he knows will be treasured more than almost every other material possession for years to come.
Read on to find out what we’re talking about.
Hey Will! Can you tell us a bit about what you do?
Three years ago, I started This Day Forward wedding photography. I’ve had the honour and pleasure of getting to travel worldwide to capture weddings. From the hinterlands of Byron Bay to remote villages in Tuscany, nowhere is too far.
I love what I do and I’m passionate about telling people’s story. To be the guy who has captured that one moment in time, that now sits on the mantelpiece or is stuck to the fridge, is what it’s all about for me.
What is the main advantage for couples who work with you?
My style is very natural. My job and passion is to capture the joy, connections and natural vibe of the day. The candid and real moments. I treat my couples like old friends and their families like my own.
Can you share some of the things that go on behind the scenes?
I feel like the whole day is behind-the-scenes. I take a step back and allow you to have an amazing time with your friends and family. I’m a fly on the wall, a guest with a camera and a friend in the background capturing the memories of your wedding day.
Do you think there are any preconceptions about the wedding industry?
The biggest preconception is that weddings need to be lavish. This is far from the truth. I’ve seen weddings large and small and the best weddings are where two families come together and create a new family. One thing that they all have in common, is that each and every couple are surrounded by the love from their family and friends. This is your day to share and celebrate your relationship with your nearest and dearest.
What are some of the main questions couples ask you? And what are the answers?
Couples want their wedding photos as soon as possible, so the most common question I get asked is, ‘when will I receive the wedding images?’ My answer: ‘there’s nothing worse than waiting to see shots from your big day, therefore I provide an online preview gallery within 24 hours for you to share with your loved ones. All edited images are then supplied on a USB four to six weeks after the wedding, in a personalised, custom made package”.
Can you describe what sets your business apart?
I don’t photograph weddings as a job, I do it because I love the gift the photos become. I’ve seen firsthand the importance of a photograph. It has the power to evoke every human emotion and my goal is to be able to share that power with you.
I watched my sister get married in a hospital waiting room so my dying Mum could watch her daughter get married. Those images are some of the last we have of mum and are treasured beyond belief. To be asked to capture important moments and memories is one of the greatest honours of my life.
What’s your next predicted wedding trend?
